About Us

milk egg peanut

In 2001, our founder, Assoc. Prof. Pete Smith recalls spending 3 hours online trying to obtain reasonable images of a glass of milk, an egg and a peanut, for a talk on food allergy. What he obtained was several images that were not copyright released, they required reformatting for use in his presentation and they did not sit together well visually. With his background in medical education and multimedia, he realised that he was not the only person facing this problem and there was a market in creating disease and speciality themed resource kits.

medicalmediakits.com was founded in 2002 with 7 main fundamentals:

  1. Medicine is a visually dependant education discipline
  2. In most education projects, obtaining the media involves most of the time and expense
  3. Good media enhances learning
  4. Most media available online is not copyright released and details of consent of identifying patient images are often not available
  5. Doctors should not spend hours creating bad drawings or sourcing images
  6. Those involved in medical education are often time poor. Media should be ‘drag and drop’, being ready to use as much as possible
  7. Our goal is create the best media for ease of use in medical education / marketing - they need to be clear, of use, accurate and of educational value.

In creating our kits we have developed a high level expert network in the area of image resources that include histology, anatomy, pathology, electron microscopy, clinical photography and videography, microbiology and radiology. We have also created large asset base in 3D models.

medicalmediakits.com has produced 12 media kits, several educational and training DVDs, and has evolved to create studio services in illustration and animations. These services are used internationally and are very cost competitive with their skill base in medical education and molecular immunology, expert resource network, 3D model library and expertise in project management.

The Future

medicalmediakits.com is evolving. With our asset base of images, we are going online with our media to allow individual, bundle and subscription based purchase of images. We are developing a high-end content management system that will allow us to manage (if the client wishes and the quality is suitable) and license medical media for third party groups. We will continue to create the professional standard in medical media, however the evolution of empowerment will be how the community use these resources.

Our ultimate goal is to create tools that allow users to rapidly create teaching resources such as slides and permit redistribution. Medical wiki-type tools can facilitate effective transfer of new information with visual reinforcement. We strive to be the professional standard for visual media.
